Cynical marketing, naivete vs. intentional misinformation, and finding a way to openly discuss mistakes and missteps

Companies are making efforts at doing better, and embracing corporate citizenship in all its alphabet soup glory (CS, CSR, CW, DEI, ESG, SDG, PPP, etc). It’s not perfect, nor are all efforts authentic — exaggeration, compromising on values, and even greenwashing happens. Greenwashing can be hard to discern, but you generally know or feel it when you see it.

That said, we have to move folks and businesses forward, wherever they are on the responsibility spectrum. The world doesn’t need 100 doing perfectly, but millions doing better, and everyone listening & thinking critically. So, let’s define greenwashing and look at a few clear examples.

In part two, I’ll share a few muddier examples, and some questions to ask ourselves, to i) think through what is happening, ii) discern if a certain action is greenwashing or first-attempts-in-learning, and iii) decide what to do.
